I’m Going Back to the Office. Am I a Hypocrite?
The answer is yes, but here’s why it doesn’t matter
Hi. If you don’t know me, I’m Jamie (not me in the photo). I’m the guy who’s written a zillion articles about why working for a corporation is soulless and should be avoided. I’m here to tell you I’ve got a new corporate job.
Am I a hypocrite? Yes.
But here’s why it doesn’t matter.
Hang on. Before we begin, this isn’t me backpedalling for 1000 words, it’s not even about me, I’m a metaphor for you doing and being what the fuck you want.
As Ad Rock from The Beastie Boys said:
“I’d rather be a hypocrite than the same person forever.”
Ok, here’s the deal. I worked in the corporate world for 19 years. My last job and boss were a heady cocktail of shit and I reached peak burnout.
A couple of months after redundancy from that role, I cried my eyes out. The grief poured out of me. Not for my stupid, boring job but because I’d treated myself so badly for so long and wasted years of my life choosing unhappiness over uncertainty.
I was miserable as fuck but scared to leave those carpet-tiled trenches.
